One of my LJ friends, [info]lbangs, posted today about American Idol (sort of), which I don't watch; but apparently they're making the contestants pick songs from their birth year to perform on the show. That's pretty cool. If I had a decent singing voice, wouldn't pass out standing up in front of a big group of people, and happened to be on American Idol this season, I would choose from the following:

1) Heart of Glass, Blondie
2) Roxanne, the Police
3) Beast of Burden, the Rolling Stones
4) Because the Night, Patti Smith
5) Anything from the Grease soundtrack (but probably There are Worse Things I Could Do or maybe Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee, because I do love me some Stockard Channing)

So...because I'm curious and think there a good chunk of people on the FList who aren't on the one of Mr. Bangs, what would you choose?

Whew... 1971
Hrm...

I'd probably do what is still one of my favorite songs:

1) Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology Song), Marvin Gaye

But I also still like:

2) Wild World, Cat Stevens
3) Love Her Madly, The Doors
4) Here Comes The Sun, Richie Havens
5) Signs, Five Man Electrical Band

Re: Whew... 1971
I heart 1971.

*there's something in my eye*

More from 1971! (Yay, [info]flerly!) These songs are assuming that I can carry a tune:

1. Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves, Cher
2. Temptation Eyes, The Grass Roots
3. If You Really Love Me, Stevie Wonder
4. Spanish Harlem, Aretha Franklin (although, in my heart, I'd be doing the Ben E. King version)
5. I Just Want to Celebrate, Rare Earth

Simon would likely call most of these songs "self-indulgent" and "karaoke", but I don't much care. :D

ETA: EGADS! I left I Am, I Said by Neil Diamond off my list! Shame on me! :O

Yeah, I would most definitely go with I Am, I Said from '71, too. :)

I am, I said
To no one there
And no one even heard
Not even the chair.

From the stellar year of 1973, here are my choices:

1. Killing Me Softly with His Song by Roberta Flack, although I admit I would probably use the 'Fugees version (is that cheating?)

2. You're So Vain by Carly Simon

3. Live and Let Die by Wings (although I admit a fondness for the GnR version.)

4. Space Oddity by David Bowie

5. Papa Was a Rolling Stone by the Temptations (who wants to be my backup on that one?)

Nice! I'm capital-J jealous of your #1. I love that song. And no, using the cover for your cover is most certainly not cheating. I would probably be singing the 10,000 Maniacs version of Patti's Because the Night.

By the way, I don't mean to be creepy stalker girl, but I didn't get a chance to officially meet you at Kit's birthday party. I recognized you from your wee little userpic, but then I realized you had no idea who I was, so I didn't want to be like, "I KNOW YOU!!! But not really." Silly me. :)

Oh rats, I would like to have met you! I have no problem with internet recognition - I've done that to people :-) Wish we could have stayed longer, but we just got back from Vegas that evening, and were just exhausted.

/radio voice "these were the smash hits of 1974!!!"

1) Jungle Boogie - Kool and the Gang
2) Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
3) Waterloo - ABBA (SHUT! UP!)
4) Any Major Dude Will Tell You - Steely Dan
5) Band on the Run - Wings

Dude. If ABBA had released Arrival a year later (or had I been born like, a month earlier), you better believe there would be at least one ABBA song in my Top 5. I unabashedly love me some ABBA.

Steve will be envious of your ABBA. He's still pouting that we didn't go see Mama Mia in Vegas.

3) Bob Segar (ATSBB) - Still The Same
4) Kansas - Dust in the Wind

And someone could kick me in the crotch to sing...

5) Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive.

Very nice picks, by the way.

of these, i would pick roxanne because the worse singer you are the better it sounds. it even sounds good when you sing it after 5 beers and 2 shots and fries with ranch dressing. i know this because i'm singing it now...

Singing the blah's is rather appropriate for this post. So here goes (in no particular order):
1) Message in a Bottle - The Police
2) Rapper's Delight - The Sugarhill Gang
3) The Gambler - Kenny Rogers
4) The Devil Went Down To Georgia - Charlie Daniels Band
5) I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor (Cake cover FTW!)

Other notable entries:
My Sharona - The Knack
Heart Of Glass - Blondie
Knock On Wood - Amii Stewart
Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough - Michael Jackson
Good Times - Chic
Brass in Pocket - The Pretenders

Cross posted on Baggie.

I'm gonna go old skool on you...because, you know...I'm all old and stuff.

1965.

1. Yesterday - The Beatles

2. You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' - The Righteous Brothers

3. Love Potion Number Nine - The Searchers

4. Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers

5. How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You - Marvin Gaye

This is, of course, if I had the slightest talent to sing these songs and didn't die of humiliation. ;)

There was some awesome music in 1965. And a lot of real duds, too. I had to discard some good stuff because of the whole 'female vocalist' part. I could probably pull off Cher, but not Diana Ross. :)
